There has recently been some discussion in both academic circles and the media about the use of patient contact shielding in radiology. There have also been some inconsistencies in application and confusion amongst patients and professionals about what is the most effective practice. As a result the BIR is publishing evidence-based guidance (written by a working party in collaboration with a number of societies/professional bodies) about the use of patient shielding which recommends the cessation of patient contact shielding.
The questions still reminds over the role of patient protection when there are repeat examinations and its use when the protection is not placed in the primary beam. especially in younger patients.
