Understanding Lead Codes

Sheet lead is graded under BS EN 12588 using a simple code system, where each code corresponds to a standard thickness and is identified by a colour marking for easy recognition on site.

The higher the code, the thicker the lead  and, for solid lead sheet, the greater its shielding capacity. Codes run from Code 3 (1.32mm) up to Code 8 (3.55mm), with the colour markings shown in the table.

In radiation protection, shielding performance is expressed as lead equivalence, measured in millimetres of lead (mm Pb). For solid lead sheet this value is the same as the physical thickness, so a Code 4 sheet provides 1.80mm Pb of protection. This gives a straightforward way to compare materials and specify the level of attenuation a particular room or piece of equipment requires.

The correct lead equivalence for any installation depends on a range of factors the type and energy of the radiation source, workload, distance, occupancy of adjacent areas, and the construction of the surrounding structure.

Because these variables differ from one site to the next, the required shielding should never be assumed.

A qualified Radiation Protection Adviser (RPA) should always be consulted to carry out a shielding assessment and determine the appropriate lead equivalence for your specific application.

This ensures full compliance with the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 (IRR17) and that staff, patients and the public are properly protected.

Lead-Lined X-Ray Doors

Bespoke doors, built for fire safety, hygiene and lasting durability in radiation-controlled areas.

Comprehensive Shielding

Rothbands X-ray room doors are available in a variety of lead thicknesses, from Code 3 (1.32mm Pb) to Code 8 (3.55mm Pb) and up to 20mm Pb for heavy-duty applications. Protection extends seamlessly through the door, frame, and architraves, creating a complete X-ray room doors barrier against leakage across the structural opening.

Fire Resistance

Our FD30 and FD60 fire doors are tested under the heating and pressure conditions of BS EN 1634-1:2014+A1:2018. Fire-rated doors and frames incorporate essential features such as door closers.

Range of finishes

These lead doorsets are available in lacquered real wood veneer, primer painted, plastic laminate, or PVC encapsulated finishes, ensuring durability and easy maintenance. Options include vision panels.

Lead curtian

Lead Curtains — Flexible Radiation Shielding,

Rothband lead curtains deliver dependable, repositionable radiation protection wherever a fixed barrier isn't practical, partitioning X-ray rooms, CT suites, cath labs, dental surgeries and mobile or temporary screening areas.

Suspended from a track system for walk-along operation, they create a flexible protective screen that can be drawn into place when needed and moved aside when not.

At the core is a lightweight lead vinyl, available in a full range of lead equivalence: 0.25, 0.35, 0.5 and 1.0mm Pb, so you can specify exactly the level of attenuation your application requires.

Each curtain complies with IEC 61331-1:2014 and IEC 61331-3:2014, the recognised standards for radiation protection devices and protective clothing, and is manufactured in the UK under our ISO 9001:2015 quality management system.

The curtain is finished in Dartex, a polyurethane-coated medical fabric chosen for its durability and infection-control credentials. It is fully wipe-clean and waterproof, biocompatible to ISO 10993-5 and ISO 10993-10 (non-irritant, non-sensitising), fungistatic to resist microbial deterioration, and flame retardant to BS 7175.

Supplied as standard at 2000mm × 1200mm, with other sizes made to order, and paired with our medium-duty 2-Way track system, available in black anodised finish, in straight and curved sections.

Rothband lead curtains combine practical day-to-day flexibility with reliable, certified protection for staff and patients.

Fail to Safe Box

X-Ray Warning Light Safety Interlock

The Rothband Fail to Safe Box (FTSB) is a safety interlock that links your X-ray room warning light directly to the power supply of the X-ray generator, ensuring an exposure cannot take place if the warning light has failed. Housed in a robust non-combustible enclosure, the unit uses a relay and photo sensor to continuously monitor the warning light: while the light is illuminated the supply to the X-ray machine remains live, but the moment the light fails to illuminate for any reason, the FTSB automatically cuts power to the generator, preventing exposure when the safety signage isn't working and protecting staff, patients and the public from unintended radiation.

The Fail to Safe Box (FTSB) is a safety interlock device for X-ray rooms. It links your warning light to the X-ray generator's power supply so that an exposure cannot take place if the warning light has failed. It's housed in a robust, non-combustible enclosure and uses a relay and photo sensor to monitor the light.

A warning light tells everyone outside the room that X-rays are in use. If that light fails without anyone noticing, exposures could continue with no visible warning. The FTSB removes that risk by automatically cutting power to the generator the moment the warning light stops working.

The FTSB is designed to be used with the Rothband RO2874SL X-ray warning light.

Yes, it is suitable for use with both monoblock systems and high-voltage X-ray machines. If your installation requires more than 13A or 230V, a suitable contactor with a 230V coil should be connected to the X-ray machine supply and wired according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Installation must be carried out by a qualified, registered electrician, in accordance with the current edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671). Before any electrical work begins, the supply must be disconnected and securely locked off.

The FTSB complies with the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 (2014/35/EU) and relevant harmonised standards, including BS EN IEC 61326-1:2021, EN 61010-1:2010 and EN IEC 63000:2018.
